Sarah McLaughlin graduated magna cum laude from Drexel University in 2014 with a B.S. in Political Science and a minor in History. She began her career with FIRE as a Program Assistant in 2012 through Drexel’s cooperative education program, and remained with the organization throughout her undergraduate studies. After graduation, Sarah worked in FIRE’s Individual Rights Defense Program, where she spent five years defending students and faculty facing censorship. She also served as the director of FIRE’s Targeted Advocacy program, focusing on the intersection of free speech issues in U.S. universities and international threats to free expression, including art censorship.
Sarah’s writing on free speech, protest laws, and blasphemy laws has been featured in major publications like Foreign Policy, Artsy, The Huffington Post, and the New York Daily News. She has been a leading voice in advocating for the protection of free expression and academic freedom both domestically and internationally.
